Activities for Kids

Please join us for BeTween the Lines, our tween book discussion at 4 p.m. Nov. 28. We’ll have snacks and a craft to go along with the book’s theme. This month we will discuss “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead. Books are available to sign out at the Information Desk. Parents are also invited to read the book and join in the discussion.

Furry Tales
Saturday, Dec. 1, 11 a.m.
Children can exercise their reading skills with Scout, the therapy dog. Sign up at the children’s desk for a 10-minute slot, and share a favorite story with a four-legged friend. Children’s Area Story Room.

Afternoon Book Discussion
Monday, Dec. 3, 1 p.m.
Discuss the book “The Lace Reader” by Brunonia Barry. A copy of the book may be obtained at the Information Desk.

Booktalking – The Battle of the Books
Wednesday, Dec. 5, 4 p.m.
Get a jump on the Battle of the Books. We will booktalk three of the Des Moines Public Schools Elementary battle books each program. This month we will discuss “Bird in a Box,” “An Elephant in the Garden” and “R My Name is Rachel.” Join us for activities, games and chat. Please preregister online or by calling 283-4152, ext. 3. Children age 8 and up.

The Wizard of Oz Sneak Peek
Saturday, Dec. 8, 1:30 a.m.
See a sneak preview of the Des Moines Community Playhouse production of “The Wizard of Oz.” We will draw for free tickets to the play. Children’s Area Story Room.

Evening Book Discussion
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m.
Instead of focusing on one book this month, we will discuss our favorite books that were published during 2012.

Tween Craft
Wednesday, Dec. 12, 4 p.m.
Tweens ages 8 through 12 are welcome to make some holiday ornaments and accessories using duct tape and some creativity. Snacks provided. Preregister.

Teen Pizza & Pages Book Discussion
Monday, Dec. 17, 4 p.m.
Teens in grades eight through 12 are invited to join us for pizza and a discussion of the book “Feedback” by Robison Wells, the sequel to “Variant.” Copies of the book will be available at the information desk.

Board Games at the Library
Wednesday, Dec. 26, 1 – 4 p.m.
Visit the Kids Area and borrow a board game to play in the library this afternoon.
