Serving God and Community

Posted November 07, 2012 in Community Featured, West Des Moines

Pastor Kerry Brown is teaching a series of classes that study the Old Testament.

Their style is casual (no suit or dress required), their music is modern (no pipe organs or hymnals), their teaching is relevant, engaging and entertaining (no liturgy or archaic language), their congregation includes people of many backgrounds, and they are all seeking their divine destiny in genuine relationship with one another.

Those are just a few keys to their success and the welcoming atmosphere at Destiny Church in Valley Junction where the congregation is encouraged to serve God and community.

“Our mission is to enable people to discover their God-given destiny and give them the equipment to fulfill it,” says Pastor Kerry Brown. “We want people to find their place and God’s plan for their life. So we ask them how they can get involved with the skills that they have and use them in the kingdom’s setting.”

Brown says the church engages its congregation and community in a number of ways by participating in the Church Outreach Group as well as implementing small groups that start meeting again Nov. 7 each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.; hosting free career support groups every Monday at 6:30 p.m. provided by Glory Works Institute that include resume preparation, interview skills, networking and emotional and spiritual support; and organizing Free Family Movie Night every second Sunday of the month that includes free admission, popcorn and soda. The next movie showing will be “The Perfect Game” on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m.

“Those are just some of the ways that we engage our congregation and reach outside our immediate church family to welcome people from our neighborhood,” says Brown.

In September, Brown began teaching a new series of classes designed to bring to life what he says is the largest and most overlooked portion of the Bible, The Old Testament. On Nov. 11 he will talk about Ezekiel and Daniel. Then on Nov. 18 he will discuss Nehemiah, Esther and the Return Prophets.

“Everything we do is designed to help people discover the holy spirit in their life,” he says.
