Funeral Services for Rebecca Whitver, 95, of Jefferson will be 10:30 am Thursday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, IA. Visitation will begin after 11:00 am Wednesday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to the Jefferson-Scranton Elementary School Foundation and may be left at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home.
Rebecca M. Whitver, the daughter of Lewis and Olive (Kloss) Farley, was born May 4, 1917 at Bismarck, North Dakota, and died November 5, 2012 at Jefferson, Iowa.
Rebecca and her parents, brother and sisters later moved from North Dakota to a farm near Churdan, Iowa. They eventually moved north of Glidden. Rebecca attended the Lanesboro School. She was baptized at the Baptist Church in Churdan. Rebecca graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934. She took Normal Training and taught in a rural school for three years.
On June 4, 1939, Rebecca was united in marriage to Max A. Whitver at the Baptist Church in Churdan. They were the parents of Kevin and Karen, and farmed near Jefferson and Scranton for several years. Rebecca became a member of the Central Christian Church in Jefferson. Max and Rebecca then bought the Roy Whitver farm northwest of Jefferson. Rebecca returned to teaching school and also graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Rebecca taught school for many years in Scranton and Jefferson. She loved teaching and working with the students. She belonged to the National Education Association and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Retired Teachers Association among others.
Survivors are her children, Kevin Whitver of Jefferson and Karen (Marlo) Malen of Lohrville; one brother, Robert Farley of Churdan; and one sister, Mae Naffziger of Apple Valley, California; as well as many nieces and nephews. Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William Dean and Chester, sisters Ramona Jean Farley, Ruth Ramsay and Irene Ferguson; and husband Max Whitver who died in 1999.
