City, School Address Coyote Concerns at Public Meeting Nov. 15

Posted November 07, 2012 in Community Web Exclusives, Johnston

The City of Johnston and Johnston Community School District will hold a public, informational meeting on Thursday, November 15 at Summit Middle School (9500 Windsor Parkway) at 7 p.m. to address recent concerns of coyotes in the area.

Jeff Swearngin of the Iowa DNR will also be at the meeting to discuss control methods and precautionary measures parents and the public can take. Please read a handout from the Humane Society of the United States for more information on coyotes and population control.

During October, Johnston Police reported an increased number of calls regarding coyote sightings; many having been near the middle school and Horizon Elementary. In an earlier statement, Johnston Police reported that Coyotes do not typically present a threat to humans, but are considered predators of small domesticated animals like dogs and cats.

For more information on the public meeting, contact the City of Johnston at 515-278-2345.
