This American foursquare house at 816 Grove St. is the much-loved home of Larry and Jackie Soloman. A square house of dependable proportions and solid construction, the foursquare got its name when then-President Theodore Roosevelt offered America a “square deal.”
Larry and Jackie moved to Adel 14 years ago from Polk County.
“Our grandchildren lived in Adel and Dallas Center,” Larry says. “They were involved in so many activities that the commute from Des Moines kept us on the road constantly.”
After hearing from a church friend that the house at 816 Grove was for sale, they looked at the house and immediately decided to relocate — and they are glad they did. Jackie said that they had lived in their Des Moines house for more than 30 years, “and here we were moving — but it was a good decision. We love this house.”
A two-story square, boxy design provides maximum interior space. The main floor has a full-width enclosed front porch, a formal entry with stairs to the second floor, a living room, an additional sitting room with a fireplace, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and mud room. The second floor has four bedrooms and a bathroom. Over the years they have added additional insulation, energy-efficient windows using the same style windows original to the house, and tuck-pointed the brick foundation. They also added new period light fixtures and door knobs, an attached garage, refinished the floors, replaced wiring and water lines and installed a new furnace.
Antique furnishings, personal collections and conversation pieces harmonize with the period of the house. A round table and chairs share space with an antique china cabinet, all refinished and reconstructed by Larry. Colonnades and porch pillars bring a touch of traditional past to the exterior making the porch very appealing to the eye.
Larry is retired from Des Moines Waterworks and enjoys genealogy, woodworking and his 1937 Chevrolet and 1968 Chevy Impala convertible. He also has an unusual collection of containers of Babo cleanser.
Jackie is retired from Principal Residential Mortgage. She collects crackle glass, loves to read and is interested in genealogy.
The Solomans have two children and six grandchildren. They are members of Grace Lutheran Church.
