Go ‘Batty’ For the Holidays

Posted October 24, 2012 in Altoona, Community Featured

We’re about ready to turn the corner into the holiday season with full force. Come to the Altoona Public Library for some fun programs and activities which will make it a more enjoyable transition for everyone.

Holiday closing
The library will be closed on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23. We resume regular hours on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Mysterious friends of the night
Learn about our mysterious winged friends of the night — the bat — at a program presented by a Polk County Conservation ranger at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31. All ages are invited.

The program will discuss some of the myths and misconceptions about these beneficial creatures. No pre-registration is required.

Kids’ story times
We have many fun story time themes scheduled for November. Check the circulation desk for a calendar or browse our website. Smiley Faces Monday story times are at 11 a.m. with a repeat at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Small Steps story times are at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9.

Busy Bees story times are for ages 2 – 6 at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 9, 16, and 30.
Activities for ages K-6

“Creative Capers” craft activities are Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m.

“Book Bingo” is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 3 p.m.

Antique appraisal day
If you’ve been up to the attic and wondered what Grandpa’s pocket watch or electric train set is worth, you will enjoy coming to the Altoona Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m.

There is no pre-registration required, but we do ask that you sign up and indicate how many items you will bring. The limit is three per person. The appraiser will give you an idea of the item’s value and possibly a little bit of history behind it as well.

It will be kind of like a miniature version of “Antiques Road Show” — without the long lines.

Become a savvy Internet shopper
Now that Christmas is on the horizon, perhaps you’d like to expand your shopping capabilities via the Internet? Perhaps you’re tired of facing the prospect of fighting long lines at the shopping mall? We have just the answer for you. Come to our Internet Shopping Class on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m.

Learn the basics of how to shop and go through the process needed to complete a successful shopping expedition.

Registration begins Oct. 24.
