Because of a steadily growing business community, the Chamber has increased its membership to more 200 for the first time in its history. However, in the grand scheme, that is about the least of the great things occurring in Grimes.
Currently, the community is experiencing unprecedented growth across many sectors. FedEx Ground is in the midst of constructing a new building that will be approximately five times larger than their existing facility in Grimes Industrial Park. Builders and developers will be responsible for nearly 120 new single-family homes this year and Hubbell Realty Company has just broken ground on another apartment complex (Meadowlark Place II).
Several new businesses have opened in the last month alone in Destination Ridge, home to the relatively new Super Walmart. This development alone will house two new restaurants, a yogurt shop, a hair salon and a wireless communications retail site. MidAmerican Energy is putting the finishing touches on a new electrical substation, a utility improvement that paves the way for substantial new development in northern Grimes.
What is being billed as the Cadillac of doggy day care facilities, Dogwoods Lodge, is under construction in Gateway Business Park adjacent to Highway 141. Just south of their construction site are two other new businesses including Back to Health Chiropractic and The Food Depot. The Food Depot is a retail outlet that offers the general public an opportunity to purchase restaurant-quality foods in bulk or smaller packages that they can cook at home.
Earlier in the year, QuickTrip opened a new facility in southern Grimes at the intersection of Highway 141 and S.E. 37th Street, a location that has more than 40,000 cars pass by every day. Across the street to the north, Grimes was the location of the first retail natural gas fueling station in Iowa, which opened earlier this year.
SkyZone was the talk of the town when it opened to rave reviews. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people visited the 20,000-square-foot trampolines facility in its first month of operation alone. A new dental clinic is being constructed along Highway 44 on the west side of Grimes, which is situated just south of a new residential subdivision known as Autumn Park. This subdivision opened about one month ago and every available lot has already been sold.
The City of Grimes is working to establish another new sports complex near North Ridge Elementary School in northern Grimes. While the Dallas-Center Grimes Community School District constructed a brand new state-of-the-art middle school known as Meadows (in honor of the family from whom they acquired the land), which opened at the start of the school year.
These are just a few of the many great things that have happened in the community that Grimes Chamber and Economic Development is honored and privileged to serve since the start of the year. What is even more exciting is that we believe it is just a precursor of many wonderful things to come in the near future.
