Suzanne F. Merrill peacefully passed away on October 6, 2012 at Legacy Point in Waukee, Iowa surrounded by her loving family. She would have been 87 in November.
Suzy was born in Des Moines on November 7, 1925 to C. E. ” Ben ” Fowler and Marjorie Martin Fowler. She was the great granddaughter of an early Des Moines pioneer, Vincent S. Martin, who emigrated to Iowa in 1853 and settled in Des Moines in the winter of 1859-60.
Suzy grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She received her Associate in Arts Degree from Monticello College in Alton, IL and attended Drake University.
Suzy was past president of the Des Moines Junior League, past Chairperson of the Metro Woman’s Network, Board Member of the Convalescent Home for Children, a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, a member of the Des Moines Pioneer Club and member of the Cathedral Church of St Paul where she served on the Vestry for a number of years. Her work history began as an employee in Bankers Life newly formed group insurance division where she was one of the first female account executives. Most of her career work history was in the temporary help industry culminating in the ownership of Western Temporary Services.
Suzy married Keith “Skip” Merrill on May 6, 1995 at St. Paul’s Church. They lived at Okoboji, IA for several years before moving back to Des Moines in 1999. Suzy and Skip enjoyed travel and spending time with family and lifelong friends.
Suzy is survived her husband, Skip; brother, Larry Fowler of Golden, CO; son, Jim Jones of Newport Beach, CA; daughter, Laurie Jones of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Andy (Emily) Jones of San Diego, CA and Katie Jones of Newport Beach, CA. and one great granddaughter on the way.
The family invites all who wish to join in celebrating Suzy’s life to attend a memorial service on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2pm at the Cathedral Church of St Paul. Suzy will be interred at the Cathedral’s Columbarium. Following interment there will be a short reception at the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, 815 High Street, Des Moines, IA, 50309.
