Carl Aspengren Jr., age 88, of 1604 Boone Street, died October 2, 2012, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Following his wishes, his body has been cremated.
A Memorial Mass will be Monday, October 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Carl was born in Boone on August 7, 1924, the son of Carl and Lorena (Koppenhaver) Aspengren.
He graduated from Boone High School in 1943.
He served with the United States Army Air Corps in communications during World War II.
On September 9, 1948, Carl married Rita Schell in Boone.
Carl was an engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railway from 1960 to 1987, retiring in August of 1987.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #56.
Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping at Cass Lake in Minnesota, playing dice and cards, tinkering in his garage, and playing solitaire on his computer.
He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Courtney Rae Aspengren; seven sisters: Velma Schroeder, Ruth Crouse, Virginia and Rose Aspengren, Myra Fyler, Helen Low, and Opal Bahren.
He is survived by his wife Rita of Boone; three sons: Tim Aspengren and wife Becky, Rick Aspengren and wife Joan, and Brian Aspengren and wife Julie, all of Boone; three daughters: Deb Michel and husband Pete of Boone and Sandy Niester and husband Steve of Ames and Patti Lewis and husband Steve of Ames; two brothers Art Aspengren and the late Betty Aspengren and Melvin Aspengren and wife Kay, and a sister Victoria Davis and husband Marlond, all of Boone; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. at which time the family will be present.
Visitation continues Monday at the funeral chapel from 8 until 9 a.m.
