The week of September 10th – the 14th was a busy week for the Jefferson-Scranton School District.  Homecoming week culminated Friday, September 14th with a victory for the Greene County Rams football team.  They beat Red Oak by a score of 28 – 0.  Students participated in a variety of activities throughout the week including dress up days, the homecoming parade and coronation on Thursday, September 13th.  I would like to congratulate Jennifer Kennedy and Daniel Rohner on their selection as Queen and King.

We had our third week of early dismissals on Wednesday for Teacher Professional Development.  This professional development method is working very well and providing teachers with access to needed collaboration time.  The professional development program is divided into three strands.  All teachers are taking part in an investigation of the Iowa Core Curriculum in the area of Reading/Language Arts.  It is important that all teachers are involved no matter what they teach, because all teachers need to be teaching students reading.  Reading is a skill that needs to be continually practiced and there are many tips and techniques in order to help people become better readers.  A second prong of the professional development is having teachers look at classroom testing data related to the core curriculum and implementing instructional changes.  The third prong enables teachers to work in collaborative groups in an area they feel they need additional professional development.
