Ten years ago, the spiritual leaders and congregation of Beautiful Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church opened the doors to their new building located on the border of West Des Moines and Waukee with the hope that it would grow at a measured rate that would allow it to maintain an intimacy with its membership and the community.
Ten years later, with a congregation that has steadily increased to approximately 165 parishioners, its pastor says Beautiful Savior is contemplating making a few additions to accommodate its growth.
“We built the church in a field and now look at what’s around us,” says Pastor Aaron Schultz, referring to the church’s proximity to Jordan Creek Town Center, a new elementary school across the street and new housing near its location on EP True Parkway. “We think about how the Lord has blessed West Des Moines as a whole and how it continues to bless our church with opportunities to serve the community.”
Schultz says the church is considering opening a preschool.
“Most of the growth in the church has been young families who we see moving to town,” he says. “We see so much potential for our ministry here, including the possible addition of a preschool. We’re trying to determine if the community needs one. Right now, we’re a blank slate and looking for ways to meet peoples’ needs. We’re praying to the Lord to direct us in the years ahead.”
Meanwhile, Schultz says, the church remains focused on serving the spiritual needs of its congregation.
“That’s our first priority,” says the 34-year-old pastor who previously worked in Texas before moving to West Des Moines with his family in 2008. “We are a Bible-believing and confessional church. We take the Bible seriously, and we let it guide our faith and our lives.”
To help do that, Schultz adds, the church kicked off its Sunday school and Bible classes on Sept. 9.
“It’s part of the growth, going from a small-sized to a medium-sized congregation,” he says. “We even see the potential to add another worship time.”Beautiful Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church
