If success is measured by the effort that one puts into a project, then I think we can say that the 33rd Adel Sweet Corn Festival was a huge success.
On the morning of the festival, the sun greeted the 91 vendors as they arrived, as well as the parade participants as they lined up. The 80-degree temperatures were perfect for the celebrations as the visitors to Adel enjoyed the 7.5 tons of buttered sweet corn and strolled the beautiful downtown historic square or settled down in the park or on the courthouse lawn to enjoy the entertainment. Adel welcomed the guests to our town with great pride and showed them what a small town can do when everyone works together to put on such a great festival.
So how do we get everything to go so smoothly? (Well, fairly smoothly.) It is the 250-plus Rotary Club members who shucked the corn Friday night; 12 people who helped set up the vendors and worked the Chamber booth; the 48-plus people and the Pack 152 Boy Scouts that helped at the corn serving tent; the Kiwanis Club that work the parade, the Lions Club and 61 people who worked the beer garden; plus the police department and the city parks department. But that is not all — we also had several people who worked behind the scenes. Planning began last October, getting bands, vendors and other entertainment. So the Sweet Corn Festival is brought to you by about 500 people, to whom I want to say thank you very, very much!
Not to be overshadowed is the sponsorship of our business associates. Without their help we could not begin to have the festival. The following list is the list of our sponsors in order of their generosity:
