MARY MALONEY, POLK COUNTY TREASURER— Redesigned property tax statements are going out this week to Polk County residents. “I believe residents will find the redesigned tax statements easier to understand”, states Mary Maloney Polk County Treasurer. Maloney reminds residents “You don’t need to wait for a statement to make a payment. Your property tax information is already on the redesigned www.IowaTaxAndTags.gov website.” Many of the statements that will be mailed are information only for taxpayers who have their mortgage company pay their taxes. If taxpayers aren’t sure who is responsible to pay, they should contact their mortgage company. The deadline for payment of the first installment of the 2011/2012 property tax without late interest is Monday, October 1.
The Treasurer’s online payment center, www.IowaTaxAndTags.gov, has been modernized for an improved user experience with additional payment options. Maloney states, “We are pleased to announce to our citizens that we have lowered the service fee associated with an eCheck to $0.30. In comparison, a postage stamp is now $0.45. We encourage citizens to check out our improvements at www.IowaTaxAndTags.gov and utilize the safe and convenient payment option of their choice.”
Payments may be mailed but must have a postmark of no later than Monday, October 1 to be processed without late interest. To receive an October 1 postmark, please mail by 8:30 p.m. on Monday, October 1, at the main post office. If mailing from an outlying post office, please check postmark deadline requirements with the post office to obtain a timely postmark. Late interest on delinquent taxes accrues at 1.5% per month. Company affixed metered mail dates do not supersede the post office postmark.
