When you get invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony, many of us first envision a brand new company with tidy desks, the smell of fresh paint, and carpet so clean you fear being the first to spill. This summer, the Downtown Chamber celebrated with ribbon cuttings for organizations that have a local presence of 59, 75, and even 140 years!
The Des Moines Symphony is a staple of the arts and culture scene in our community and carries a national reputation as one of the country’s leading regional orchestras. On July 17th, the Downtown Chamber held a ribbon cutting at the Des Moines Symphony’s new administrative offices, located in the Temple for Performing Arts, a fitting home. The ribbon cutting ceremony was not only for the expanded office space and new location, but also for the symphony’s 75th Anniversary and the Symphony Academy’s 10th Anniversary.
On July 26th, the chamber joined Manpower, Inc. at their new location. Manpower has been in Des Moines since 1953, though never more visible than now. Most recently inside a suite on Fifth Avenue, Manpower now sits on the corner of 17th and Grand Avenue in downtown’s Western Gateway. The exterior setting compliments their upbeat and professional staff, and they couldn’t be more delighted to be a part of the Western Gateway business community.
Earlier this month, Hammer Pharmacy held a ribbon cutting with the Downtown Chamber on August 14th. They are new members to the Downtown Chamber, but not new to being located downtown. The celebration acknowledged Hammer Pharmacy’s re-grand opening as a Health Mart pharmacy and also a noteworthy 140th anniversary! This historical element of the East Village area, established in 1872, set the record for oldest anniversary celebrated by the Downtown Chamber. However, the record can be broken. There are two other Downtown Chamber members who were established prior to Hammer Pharmacy.
Next time you see a ribbon cutting on the calendar of events, take a moment to reach out to this business and congratulate them or plan to attend the ceremony. Your support and presence acknowledges to this business that they matter and assures them that they are an important part of our community’s fabric.
