If any Appanoose County residents have not yet experienced a balmy summer evening dining on the deck at Honey Creek Resort State Park, all I have to say is that they are missing out.
Luckily there should be a few warm nights left, and I can’t think of a better way to commemorate the end of summer than one last evening escaping the worries of the day at the resort.
On a recent visit to the resort’s restaurant, the Rathbun Lakeshore Grille, I tried the Catch of the Day, which happened to be mahi-mahi on a bed of angel hair pasta in garlic white wine sauce with roasted squash, red pepper and zucchini for $17.99. The resort has a long list of salad dressings, but I picked well when I ordered the Vidalia onion dressing. It was sweet and just a little tangy. I look forward to ordering it again.
One of my dining partners tried the Cajun Pork, which was pork seared with Cajun seasonings paired with a honey cream sauce and spiced apples for $14.99. He pronounced it excellent and a little reminiscent of New Orleans. This dish was part of the February menu overhaul.
And don’t worry if the prices sound a little high. The restaurant also offers several sandwiches for less than $10, and I can attest from a previous visit that the pork spring roll appetizer for $6.99 can serve as a great meal, too. It consists of three large spring rolls stuffed with pork, smoked gouda, black beans and corn with cider Thai dipping sauce.
We sat on the deck with a gentle breeze blowing, listening to Cross Roads, a classic rock and honky-tonk band that played from 6 to 10 p.m. that night. If you are interested in entertainment, you can check the resort website ahead of time for the schedule.
The wait staff was very attentive and accommodating. When they found out we were celebrating a birthday, they brought out a complimentary piece of carrot cake topped with luscious cream cheese frosting. It truly was the icing on the cake of a lovely night out at Honey Creek, which has rightly become the pride of Appanoose County.Rathbun Lakeshore Grille
