Johnston Public Library to Offer Downloadable Music

Posted August 13, 2012 in Community Web Exclusives, Johnston

Have you ever heard the word “Freegal”?  It’s a combination of the words “free” and “legal” – and it represents a whole new service for Johnston library users.

The Johnston Public Library recently joined the Library Ideas™ network of public library websites that offer access to more than 3 million songs including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists.  The Freegal™ Music Service will allow our library to increase the size and diversity of our collection by offering access to more than 10,000 music labels from 65 different countries.

Under the terms of the agreement, registered cardholders of the Johnston Public Library may download a limited number of Freegal Music tracks in the MP3 format at no direct cost via <>  as a service of the library.

The Freegal Music Service recently announced the availability of free mobile apps for registered cardholders of subscribing libraries.  These apps are available in the Apple® App Store and Google Play®.   The apps make it easier to download directly to mobile devices.

“We are pleased to offer a service like this that delivers great music, provides compatibility with a number of devices, and is easy to use.  We believe this will be incredibly popular with our library users and will be yet another reason for Johnston residents to use their local library.”

For further information about this new service, including a complete list of frequently asked questions and answers, go to <>  or contact our Public Services staff at (515) 278-5233.
