Moving On

Posted August 08, 2012 in Community Featured, Clive

August heralds the end of the summer, and with that comes many changes. Kids go back to school, vacations end and real life begins again. Clive churches are getting ready to go back to real life with changes this fall.

Heartland Presbyterian Church at 14300 Hickman Road has undergone major construction.

If you’ve found yourself driving on Hickman somewhere around 142nd Street this summer, you’ve probably noticed the changes that are already being made at Heartland Presbyterian Church, located at 14300 Hickman Road. The church has undertaken a major construction project as it adds a new extension to the building. The recent Capital Campaign raised $1.4 million for the building project.
“The participation, the cheerfulness and the overall responses were incredibly inspiring,” says Pastor Mark Davis.

Heartland is also looking for a new mission co-worker to move to El Salvador and pick up the work of Kathy Mahler, who is returning to Iowa later this year. In 1990, Rev. Robert Cook visited Berlin, El Salvador, as the Hunger Action Enabler of the Presbytery of Des Moines. He chronicled his time there in a recent book, “When the Sun Comes Up in the West.” His visit sparked Heartland’s mission program.
Mahler took up the position of mission co-worker in 2008 and has remained for four years. Although it is time for her to return to Iowa, she encourages people to apply for the position to make a difference in El Salvador.

“Our sister parish is a faith-based ecumenical effort designed to bring hope and social development to the poor of the pueblo of Berlin, El Salvador,” Mahler says.

Faith Lutheran Church, located at 10395 University Ave., is making changes this fall as well. Faith is looking for a new director of music ministry.

The worship, music and arts ministries continue to function during the search for a new director, as duties such as worship-hymns, liturgy, special music and other related tasks are performed by various members during the interim.
