REVISIT THE ROARING 20s AT THE SALISBURY HOUSE GATSBY GALA

Posted July 12, 2016 in Community Featured, Community Blogs, Community Web Exclusives, Web Exclusives

The Salisbury House Foundation is bringing back the splendor, extravagance and frivolity of the 1920s with its Gatsby Gala fundraising event on Saturday, August 20, 2016 from
6-10 p.m. on the south terrace and gardens of Salisbury House. Guests will enjoy an evening of dancing to live music by The Max Wellman Quintet, an array of delectable complimentary food from local restaurants and caterers, speakeasy-approved libations, 1920s inspired fashion and haberdashery, plus a few surprises to assure a roaring good time!  Black tie or 1920s inspired attire is encouraged.

The event pays homage to the prosperous twenties era in which Salisbury House was built. In the early 1920s Carl and Edith Weeks visited the town of Salisbury, England and toured King’s House, a manor incorporating Gothic, Tudor and Carolean architectural influences from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries.  The Weekses were inspired and a vision emerged.

Construction crews broke ground in Des Moines in 1923 and Carl, Edith and their four sons took up residence in 1926, two years before construction of their manor house was entirely completed. Today Salisbury House still houses the Weeks family’s historic and significant collection of paintings, sculpture, rare books and documents, antique furniture, and decorative arts. Now owned by the Salisbury House Foundation, whose mission is to preserve, interpret and share the international significance of Salisbury House and its collections as a historic house museum for the educational and cultural benefit and enjoyment of the public.

“The Salisbury House Foundation is delighted to bring back this great event. This year we’re pulling all the stops to make this a successful fundraiser for the Salisbury House so we can continue the educational and cultural programming we offer year-round. And it’s a fun way to interact with the community and get people involved with Salisbury House,” said Kit Curran, Executive Director of the Salisbury House Foundation.

Gatsby Gala is made possible with support from EMC Insurance, Simonson & Associates Architects LLC, Bankers Trust, Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa, Wild Rose Entertainment, Catering DSM, Crème Cupcake & Dessert, Christiani’s VIP Catering, Gateway Market Catering, Splash Seafood Bar & Grill and Stella Artois. Special thanks to Bravo Greater Des Moines, MidAmerican Energy, and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs for their ongoing operating support.

For additional information or to purchase tickets, visit www.salisburyhouse.org or call (515) 274-1777. Proceeds from Gatsby Gala benefit Salisbury House Foundation’s educational and cultural programming.
