Home entertainment

Posted August 26, 2015 in Community Featured, Pleasant Hill

The Johnsons are like most families around town: they have busy lives juggling jobs, kids’ schedules, school activities, sporting events and volunteer work. But unlike other families who probably have an entertainment center in their home, the Johnsons have made theirs a center for home entertaining.

Mark and Janet moved to Pleasant Hill in 1998, and have lived in their current home just off E. Oakwood Drive for 11 years. Janet comments, “We like the small-town feeling, while living so close to all of the great things Des Moines has to offer.  We have made so many friends in our neighborhoods over the years, as well as through participation in soccer and baseball leagues. We are also proud to be a part of the Southeast Polk school district. We love our neighbors and think of them as additional family.”

The Johnsons relish their time together at home, whether it’s hanging out in the finished basement watching a movie, shooting hoops in the driveway or jumping into the backyard pool that Mark (and several family members and friends!) put in three summers ago. Janet adds, “The pool and surrounding deck have been an awesome addition to our home. The kids get in pretty much every day and it is great for entertaining family and friends for holidays and special occasions.”

Recently Mark has taken his home improvement skills indoors. He says, “What began as us getting new kitchen countertops turned into a full-blown remodeling effort – with new hardwood floors in the kitchen and front sitting room, updated appliances and repainting!”  While Mark puts the finishing touches on that this summer, Janet and the kids are usually outside tending to the landscaping and flower beds that offer a cheerful entrance to visitors.

The Johnsons also enjoy family time on the road, whether it’s as far away as Hawaii or as close as Kansas City. But Mark and Janet both agree it’s always nice to get back home. It’s where their kids Jace, Talen and Kenadi have grown up, as Janet recalls. “This has truly been their home they’ll always remember. Every special occasion and memorable moment in their lives has happened here. We just can’t imagine living anywhere else.”
