It’s plenty hot outside, but the end of summer looming on the horizon. As Ames Public Library winds down a summer of superheroes, we’ll be gearing up for back to school and fall in Ames.
There are still a few chances to escape the ordinary at the Library, including free movies on our big screen every Tuesday evening.
To plan a more literal escape, come to a presentation on Unique Travel Saturday, August 22, at 2pm in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium.
Kids and teens are invited to an extra special Skype event with author Matthew Cody Tuesday, August 4, at 12:45pm in the Auditorium. Cody is the author of “Powerless” and the Supers of Noble’s Green books, among others.
Many Ames families will be happy to hear that the Hot Dog Dinner Theater has returned this year! Thursday, August 6, come to a noon or 5pm meal featuring hot dogs followed by an amazing magic show by Rick Eugene.
Rick will also lead a magic class for 3rd graders and older August 6 at 2pm. Pre-registration is required. Visit www.amespubliclibrary.org and register through the event calendar.
If you chose the Pool Party Prize for completing the summer reading incentive program, get ready to celebrate the end of summer at the Aquatic Center! The teen pool party is Friday, August 14, from 8 to 9pm. The family pool party is Saturday, August 15, from 9 to 10:30am. Make sure you have your special ticket from the reading program; Regular pool passes won’t get you in to this private shindig!
Literary Grounds will celebrate the coming fall with a School Days Book Sale August 14-16 in the Library’s lobby. There will be some great deals on children’s books. Select books will be half price on Sunday.
Don’t forget the public library once school gets going. Along with our helpful staff, abundant books and research materials, and comfortable study areas, Ames Public Library offers you free access to some excellent online resources that would normally cost a subscription fee! One of my favorites is Brainfuse, which specializes in online tutoring. You can talk live with certified tutors any day between 2 and 11pm. You can also get writing help, set up virtual study groups, prepare for the ACT, and much more. Visit the Ames Public Library website and click “Research” to get to Brainfuse and a whole host of online resources for all ages.
Thanks for a marvelous summer, Ames!
