A: Summer is a busy time for everyone. The warmer months usually mean the kids are out of school, various activities are planned, and more people are traveling. Regardless of what many people think, eating healthy can save you time and money. Planning meals and snacks in advance may help you and your family make smart, nutritious choices on the move!
Here are some great tips for eating healthy while on-the-go this summer:
- Plan ahead. Start preparing ahead of time to avoid last-minute packing. Begin making and freezing food before your actual trip; this will help you feel more prepared and make healthier options.
- Get the kids involved! They can help make homemade trail mix, sandwiches, and wash fruits and vegetables. Put your snacks in sealable bags or travel friendly containers for easy access.
- Know your amounts. Measure out ingredients and portions so you know you’re eating the correct serving size. Tip: Mark a line with a permanent marker in a plastic cup for a portable “measuring spoon” to scoop out perfect portions!
- Pack a cooler! Fill it with healthy meals, snacks and drinks when you’re on the road. This can help avoid the urge to make a pit stop at fast food restaurants when everyone is hungry. On your next trip, you’ll be prepared with a well-stocked cooler full of nutritious options.
