May at the Adel Public Library is jam packed with fun and events so we hope to see you around! We are pleased to be a part of Dallas County Toddlerfest again this year, which takes place at the Dallas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 2nd from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Bring out your littles for crafts, activities, face painting, princesses, a petting zoo and appearances from the Science Center of Iowa and Blank Park Zoo. Each child will even receive a free book! This event is sponsored by 4R Kids and the Dallas County Library Association.
Garage sales are finally back this month! They take place on the second floor of the library, every last Friday and Saturday of the month. On Fridays, the sale goes from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The garage sales have lots of household and outdoor items and every month there are new items added that have been donated from the community. All garage sale profits to go our Friends group.
We are also putting on a very fun program this month called Old Magazine Day. Join us as we look through ads and stories in magazines from way back when. Adel resident Gladys Harvey is nice enough to share her special collection with us. Come reminisce as we take a look back at a different time. If you have any old magazines that you would like to share with the group, feel free to bring them! We hope to see you on Friday, May 15th at 10:30 am.
We are especially excited for our Evening Book Club this month, as we will be reading a book written by a Woodward resident, Karen Weir-Jimerson. Her book is called So Much Sky and we will hold the book discussion and get a very special author visit from Karen on Thursday, May 28th at 7:00 pm. We welcome everyone to this discussion and presentation; you do not need to be in the book club to join us. We will also hold our Brown Bag Book Club on Thursday, May 14th at 12:00 pm; we will be discussing The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan.
Just a couple reminders: we will be taking the month of May off from our regular story times in order to get ready for our Summer Reading Program. Don’t worry though, there will be plenty of stories, crafts and dancing to come in the month of June! We will also be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. The library staff will be getting reading for the Summer Reading Program Sign-up, which takes place the day after, on Tuesday, May 26th! Our theme this year is Every Hero Has a Story. Be sure and stop in on that day to get your summer reading calendar and the rules for the program. You definitely won’t want to miss our Summer Reading Kickoff, which is in on Friday, June 5th at 10:00 am! We will have a very special guest to help us kick off the program and we will give you just one clue: Blank Park Zoo.
There will be a library board meeting on Tuesday, May 5th at 5:00 pm. There will also be a Friends of the APL Foundation Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 7th at 6:30 pm. As always, we will be holding a Classic Movie Monday this month. It will take place on Monday, May 11th at 2:00 pm; we will be showing An American in Paris.
