The Jansen’s moved to Adel from the Southeast side of Des Moines in 2013. Like many other young couples, they wanted to live in a small town similar to where they grew up. Jessica grew up in Walden, Colorado and Derek is from Sioux Center, Iowa. “When we were looking for a house, Adel felt right and people were friendly,” says Jessica. “We liked the idea of walking to the square for ice cream, walking to church and being near the bike trail.” “Plus we have the best seat in town for the sweet corn parade.”

The 125 year old house stands on property that was owned in 1851 by James R. Mills. The first owner of the house was J.F. Dack and he is believed to have been the one who had the house built in 1890. The house once served as the parsonage for The First United Methodist Church, and now the Jansen’s  are active members of that church.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The three bedroom, two bath house has a large foyer with a beautiful ornate wood carved staircase, dining room, living room, kitchen, a utility room that was originally the butler’s pantry, a bonus room and a wrap-around porch. French doors divide the foyer from the living room and large windows throughout the house allow plenty of natural light. A portion of the old carriage house foundation still stands on the west side of the front lawn. A large detached garage and new concrete driveway have been added and the property got a face lift with a new white vinyl fence. The Jansen’s honor the homes architecture, so they have not changed the layout. Jessica textured and painted the interior walls and has accessorized the house with the proper home décor. She enjoys using her talent to take pieces from standard to standout and likes to focus on rusticity.

Before moving to Adel Jessica was a school counselor in Newton. She is now a stay at home Mom and markets her handmade décor and home fragrances on Etsy/A Little Common “Scents.” Derek is an actuary for Athene in Des Moines, and has been studying about 20 hours a week for three and a half months for his LAST actuarial exam. The Jansen’s have two boys, Jude and Lennon.
