Larry G Porter

Larry Porter was born August 30, 1938 in Des Moines to Garry and Pauline Knapp Porter. He graduated from North High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years as a Flight Engineer in California, Alaska and Texas. He moved back to Des Moines and sold real estate for Iowa Realty for 35 years and worked in Security for Principal Financial Group for 10 years until retirement.

Larry loved to travel with his family and go on motorcycle rides with his friends. He was a member of the Elks Club of West Des Moines. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and was always available to anyone who asked him for help.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marge; son, Loren Porter of Des Moines; daughter, Lory Aleman of West Des Moines; step son, Tim (Debbie) Hansen of Spokane, WA; step daughters, Debbie Hansen and Anne Hansen both of Des Moines; grandchildren, Luke (Sanna) Hansen and Erin (Geoff) Quinn all of Seattle, WA, Joshua Signs, Ashley Signs and Paige Signs all of Des Moines and Brandon Signs of Brownsville, TX; great grandchildren, Jack and Claire Hansen, Graeme and Chelsie Quinn and Elizabeth Paige Signs; two sisters, Sue (Ralph) Lyle of San Jose, CA and Kay (Mike) Stanfill of Des Moines; two brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Porter of Johnston and Dan (Carla) Porter of Van Meter and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and other family members.

Larry passed away on April 29, 2015 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation will be from 2-4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Iles Westover Chapel. Cremation rites will follow. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 4 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
