Date night at a grocery store? It just might be crazy enough to work. When Hy-Vee decided to start implanting their namesake restaurant “Market Grille” next to their grocery stores in 2012, they undoubtedly faced naysayers – but that was before those skeptics tried the food. “It was actually really good” seems to be the veritable refrain of Market Grille’s first time diners, as each one announces that dinner at the grocery store just might be the best thing since sliced bread (available right next door, aisle seven).

The hostess stand, the well-dressed wait staff, the soft lighting. These are just a few of the touches that ease diners through the transition from grocery store to gourmet meal. When you enter Market Grille, you leave behind your role as the shopper. You’re not there to plan a meal; you’re there to enjoy one. Savor some seared scallops or a sushi roll. Fill up on a sandwich or indulge in a pasta dish. If you’re craving it, Market Grille is offering it. With menu items falling in the $10-20 range, and coupons appearing almost weekly in the local paper, Market Grille can easily be a bargain. Don’t have time to sit down and enjoy the casual, yet classy atmosphere of the restaurant? Consider putting in an order for pickup, doing your grocery shopping and grabbing your meal to go.

The night I dined at Market Grille, the atmosphere was relaxed and calm. Families dined in various corners, their faces aglow under hanging lamps. Armed with our coupon from the paper, my husband and I indulged in a fancy meal. He gave rave reviews of his steak, baked potato and coleslaw, while I savored every bite of my salmon, wild rice and roasted vegetable entrée. By the time the check came, we found ourselves saying the very thing we had heard from the other first time diners – it actually was really good! The notion that we could complete any last minute errands by merely walking a few feet? Only another perk. With the ability to finish your grocery list and enjoy a great meal right now, Hy-Vee Market Grille ensures that when you go out to shop, this can be your only stop.Hyvee2
