Changing faces

Posted April 22, 2015 in Community Featured, Boone

Call it a ‘changing of the guard’ on Keeler Street. For it seems that as long as clocks have been ticking and tocking, this favorite place in downtown Boone has been known as the Tic Toc.

But that all changed recently, as evidenced by the new signs already installed, and the new menu set to debut this spring.

Calmer and Company is the newest restaurant in Boone, the prodigy of the familiar catering company with its own tasty history in the community.

While the new menu has some tempting offerings, I opted for a classic Iowa favorite when we stopped in to dine one recent afternoon. After all, in this state restaurants are often known by their tenderloin, so I decided to check out the Calmer and Company version of the comfort food favorite.

The juicy slice of breaded pork spilled over the bun in every direction, looking to be about twice the size of a single bun. Inside, the breading was crisp and the pork and moist and delicious.

I paired the classic sandwich with zesty side of pasta salad that had all the hallmarks of upscale recipes that Calmer is known for. Sliced pepperoni, black olives, and a variety of chopped vegetables and seasonings kicked up the flavor more than a notch. I could have just about made a meal of this salad and a toasty piece of bread.

My dining companion, a spaghetti aficionado, ordered a heaping plate of spaghetti, and still walked away with more than he could eat. The pasta noodles were cooked to perfection, while the home-made meat sauce offered stick-to-your-ribs goodness.

My only regret is that we had somehow missed coming on Wine Night. But since my dining companion is more into tap beer, he was just fine with the way it turned out. I’ll just be sure to watch the website and bring along another couple when I see it upcoming again.

When the new menu arrives yet this spring, look for plenty of old favorites, as well as new choices that bring their own distinct taste. After all, it’s fun to try something new!

A new restaurant in a familiar, and very popular setting, is sure to please. Time passes, and things change, but Calmer and Company looks to be starting a great tradition of their own.
