The Youth Group at St. Peter Lutheran Church will participate in the Grimes City-Wide Garage Sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 to raise money for their trip to the Rise Up Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan, this July.
Every year, the kids accept donated items from church members and the community and then re-sell them to raise proceeds for their trip. This year, the money will be used to send 18 kids and four adults to the three-day gathering that attracts over 30,000 people from around the country who gather for worship at Ford Field football stadium.
St. Peter Youth Director Tim Schiller said the trip presents a chance for kids to get outside their comfort zone and learn about the world around them.
“They get to meet and work with people from different walks of life,” he says. “Our kids love showing compassion to the Detroit community.”
The gathering features three days of events: one of service around Detroit, one of exploratory learning and one of interactive learning. During the day of service, the children volunteer for work like boarding up windows, cleaning up streets and even making flip-flop sandals from recycled tires. Throughout the events, Tim says that the youth are able to find other kids who share their feelings and experiences, and together they can grow in their faith.
“The best part is seeing their reaction, what they get out of it,” he says. “Some have a good grasp of their faith, but others are still searching. But no matter what, they can meet someone who shares their feelings and is at the same point as they are.”
In addition to the garage sale fundraiser on May 9, the Youth Group will also lead the church’s worship services at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, sharing prayers and performing songs and skits.
