Running a business requires passion, commitment and information. The Kirkendall Public Library has the resources you need to help make your business a success. Patrons can use their library card to access online databases through the Library’s webpage at www.ankenyiowa.gov/library and clicking Reference 24/7 to get information about marketing, writing a business plan, or hiring and training quality employees.
ReferenceUSA is used by entrepreneurs, businesses, students, job-seekers or anyone wanting access to information on more than 34.5 million U.S. businesses and hundreds of millions of consumers in an easy to search format. Patrons can target their marketing to local consumers in the Consumer Lifestyles module or find suppliers or locate information on competitors and similar businesses using the U.S. Business module.
Bill Carlson, Account Executive for ReferenceUSA, will provide training to local businesses interested in the tool at a Lunch and Learn at the Kirkendall Public Library on Monday, April 27, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Kirkendall meeting room. Local businesses are invited to send one representative. Lunch will be provided so reservations are required by calling 515-965-6460, ext. 5.
Another reference the Library has for business professionals is the EBSCO Small Business Reference Center. This tool provides downloadable e-books on a variety of topics, including tax guides, business plans, marketing, and how to incorporate your business. Business videos provide critical information for business owners through interviews in a ’lessons learned’ feature, lectures and ‘how to’ videos to help foster success in all aspects of starting and growing a business. The Small Business Reference Center also has a collection of state-specific resources, such as demographic data, fastest-growing cities, licenses and permits, and other information for the start and development of businesses.
Patrons also can use Learning Express to improve computer skills for themselves or their employees. Interactive video tutorials teach computer and Internet basics and popular software programs. The career center module offers practice occupational exams to help prepare for professional development.
In addition to all of these tools, the Library also has business books and magazines for check out. Ernest and Julio Gallo found the recipe for success at their local library. In 1933, they checked out a pamphlet called “The Principles of Winemaking” and launched a business that continues to be successful today. Whether you are looking for inspiration, information or the blueprints of industrial mavens, the Kirkendall Public Library is available to help make your business a success.
