SNOW CLEANUP – Johnston received the unfortunate distinction earlier this week as the city with the most snow! The weekend snowstorm dumped 14.2 inches on Johnston over the weekend — more than any other Iowa town. Please remember to remove all vehicles parked from city streets during snowstorms. Anytime there is snow — and for a period after — the city snow ordinance is in effect. Parking is not allowed on public streets at any time when snow removal operations are in progress. It is likely your vehicle will be ticketed or towed. When vehicles are off city streets, Public Works crews can clear streets more quickly. Check out this video taken during the storm to see how parking on city streets gets in the way of snow removal operations.
Clearing snow from all sidewalks adjacent to private property is the responsibility of the property owner. Sidewalks must be cleared of snow within 48 hours after a snowfall. If snow accumulates to the point it covers a fire hydrant, please clear the snow around the hydrant. This will save precious time in the event the fire department must access the hydrant during a fire.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS & THINK SPRING – The City of Johnston is once again selling trees to residents at the reduced price of $25 per tree. A pre-sale of trees begins on Monday, April 13 at 8 a.m., and can be purchased at Johnston City Hall. Property owners are allowed to purchase one tree and are encouraged to purchase their tree during the pre-sale event, as the supply is limited. City Hall is located at 6221 Merle Hay Road.
Trees will then be available for pick up at the Johnston Public Works Department on Saturday, May 2 from 9-11 a.m. Residents who have pre-ordered a tree will be required to show their receipt as proof of payment. Any trees not picked up during the allotted time will be considered a donation to the city’s tree planting program.
NEW COMPOST IT! INFORMATION – The 2015 Metro Waste Authority Compost It! season will run from March 30 through November 25. The price of Compost It! stickers and Compost It! bags has increased five cents each to reflect the increased cost to collect and process yard waste. Compost It! stickers have increased to $1.25 per sticker (stickers are used on brush bundles or with store-brand yard waste bags) and Compost It! bags have increased to $8.00 per bundle ($1.60 per bag). The Compost It! cart subscription price remains the same at $105/year.
CENSUS WORKERS NEEDED – The City of Johnston will be working with the US Census Bureau to conduct a special census in 2015. To accomplish this task, the US Census Bureau will be canvassing the City in the spring to accurately count the number of residents residing in the City, and will be hiring a number of temporary workers. While this hiring process hasn’t yet begun, we are gathering contact information for anyone interested in this temporary employment opportunity.
If you are interested, please email the following information to David Wilwerding, Community Development Director:
