This is the second article in the New Year that I am writing about library services that you can access away from the library. In January, I talked about the library’s map database, A to Z Maps Online. This month it is WILBOR or less commonly known as the Western Iowa Library Borrowing Online Resources consortium. WILBOR is the Perry library’s virtual branch where Perry library cardholders can download an audiobook or an ebook — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Since we joined WILBOR in 2008, the online virtual library has grown to over 18,000 ebook and audiobook titles.
Two years ago we enhanced the library’s WILBOR membership to the Advantage level. Advantage membership gave the Perry Public Library the ability to add additional copies of popular titles that are only available to our patrons. Extra copies of books mean that your wait time for holds is reduced!
When we first joined WILBOR in 2008, the downloading experience was cumbersome in that you would have to download the book to your computer using software called Overdrive. Then you transferred the book to your ereader or MP3 player for you to read or listen. As technology and software improved, the borrowing and using ebooks and audiobooks have become extremely straight forward. Currently you can browse on your smartphone, Nook, Kindle, or android ereader using an Overdrive App, check out your book and download in seconds.
For the savvy reader who reads in their browser instead of downloading the title, you can read your book in days and return it early to check out more books. This allows readers to avoid the mandatory two-week check out period when you download books.
If you need help getting started with your ereader or smartphone, please come into the library and any of the staff will be happy to help you find the Overdrive App for your device, show you how to browse for books, check them out, and then download them directly to your device.
