Irene MarJean (Shell) Simonson, age 90, of Des Moines and formerly of Madrid, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 25, 2015.
She has been cremated. A Memorial service will be Friday, January 30, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Her cremains will be buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.
Irene was born in Boone, Iowa, on July 30, 1924, to Henry and Agnes (Pestotnik) Shell.
She had a strong work ethic beginning at a young age working on the family farm in Boone County.
She moved to Des Moines in the early 1950’s to raise her family. Irene worked in the credit department of Sears for over 25 years at both the downtown and Merle Hay stores.
Irene enjoyed traveling and in retirement, she spent many winters in southern Texas. She also enjoyed a good game of cribbage and had a passion for bingo.
Irene will be missed by sons Mick (Pam) of Silt, Colorado, Pat of Stratford, and Dennis (Lynda) of New Braunfels, Texas, and daughters Margene (Tom) Kennedy of Des Moines and Mary (Steve) Moore of Loveland, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren: and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Harold and Lu Schell, and sister and brother-in-law Genevieve and Francis Headlee, and infant sisters Mary Anne and Anna Mae Shell.
Friends may call at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
In memory of Irene, memorials may be directed to the family.
