Harold A. Shearer

Harold Albert Shearer, 91, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. In agreement with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Harold’s life will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, January 17, at Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church, in rural Madrid, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time on Saturday. A private committal service will take place at a later date at Hull Cemetery, west of Luther.

Harold was born on June 18, 1923, in Polk City, Iowa to Clyde E. and Ethel M. (Hunt) Shearer. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. On November 21, 1947, Harold was united in marriage to Elizabeth Zenor in Luther, IA and to this union, three children were born. After 29 years, he retired from John Deere Des Moines Works in 1985. Harold also farmed in Polk City, Madrid and near Luther during his retirement. Harold was a member of Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church since he was a child; a near 70-year member of Masonic Lodge Star Lodge #115; and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association since 1964. He was also charter member of the Central Iowa Two Cylinder Club; and a lifetime member of the Madrid VFW Post 5060.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Shearer of Madrid; two daughters, Susan Barker and Patti (Dan) Boone both of Madrid; son, Don E. (Diane) Shearer of Madrid; five grandchildren, Alicia (Matt) Duncan of Ames, IA, Emily (Aaron) McCarty of Madrid, Nathan “Boonie” (Bethany) Boone of Des Moines, Squire (Amber) Boone of Tempe, AZ and Danielle Shearer of Madrid; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Henry Duncan, Claire McCarty, and Strummer and Lola Boone. Harold was preceded into eternal life by his parents; brother who was lost at sea during WWII, Donald H. Shearer; sister, Ruby Webster; son-in-law, Stephen Barker; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Vera Zenor; and brother-in-law, Charles Zenor.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions may be made in Harold Shearer’s memory to either: Masonic Lodge Star Lodge #115; or Madrid Home – ACTS Fund.
