WEST DES MOINES, IOWA — Students and staff at Hillside Elementary School in West Des Moines will take the floor during a series of workshops Tuesday, Jan. 20 and Wednesday, Jan. 21 with visiting artists from the Diavolo dance troupe.
The school visits are in advance of the group’s performances later in the week at the Des Moines Civic Center. Hillside fourth- through sixth-graders will attend a Friday, Jan. 23 show for area students; a public performance is set for Saturday, Jan. 24.
Diavolo’s artists blend several forms of dance — including everyday movement, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip-hop — into their stage performances and workshops at schools around the country. Skills to build trust, teamwork, and confidence are also incorporated into the academic visits.
Hillside fifth-graders study Diavolo each year as part of their curriculum. The dance sessions for fifth- and sixth-graders will incorporate concepts from the Artful Learning units presented at the school. The workshop for Hillside educators will focus on ideas to bring dance and hands-on learning into their classrooms.
