Word of Life

Posted January 14, 2015 in Community Featured, Winterset

Every Wednesday night, twelve months of the year, approximately sixty Word of Life kids, ages three through sixth grade, gather together for a time of praise and worship and bible lessons. Bruce and Nicole Wangler have pastored at Word of Life for the past eighteen years. Bruce is the head pastor while Nicole is the children’s director scheduling all of the events for the kids throughout the year. “Kids have always been a priority with Word of Life,” Nicole says.

The program starts at 7 pm with a time of praise and worship. They break up into age groups for object lessons, skits, and games. The majority of the kids bring friends. For the past fifteen years, the church has operated a bus ministry to transport kids to and from the church. Those needing rides simply call the church to be placed on the list to be picked up at their home.

The curriculum they are using is Big City Studio which is a six year program running through all the major bibles stories. Nicole does the Wednesday night teaching which is topical and has included things like faith, peace, love, fruits of the spirit, and the armor of God.

The program continues on Sunday morning with others who help out with teaching. The kids are dismissed to their own worship room during Sunday morning services. The kids attending either Wednesday or Sunday earn points by attendance, bring their bibles, answering questions, bringing friends, or simply for their birthday. They can spend the points they earn in the church store on a variety of items.

In January, seven and eight year olds have the opportunity for a bible challenge. They will learn all of the books of the bible plus specific scriptures. “There are three challenges they can take and if they complete all three they will participate in an award ceremony,” Nicole says.

Junior high and high school age students meet at the Power Company on Wednesday night and are led by Mike Patterson. “They have their own youth led worship time and a message by Pastor Mike,” she says.
