Food Bank of Iowa Partners with Winterset Middle School in Pilot School Pantry Program Paw Pantry to help feed hungry Winterset children and families

Posted January 12, 2015 in Des Moines West, Community Web Exclusives, West Des Moines, Winterset

Des Moines, IA – December 30, 2014 – The Food Bank of Iowa is partnering with Winterset Middle School in a new school pantry program targeted to feeding hungry children and their families. Winterset Middle School will be one of six pilot programs during the 2014-15 school year. The Winterset Paw Pantry will be open to local needy families on Thursdays from 3:15- 5:15 p.m. as well as during school hours by appointment only.

As the Food Bank of Iowa’s BackPack Program™ reaches nearly 5,000 children per week, they are investing in new, innovate ways to feed not only food insecure children but their family as well. “In many of the communities we serve, the school is a hub of activity and a resource center for families,” says Carey Miller, executive director of the Food Bank of Iowa. “School based pantries are located on the grounds of the school and are able to provide a more readily accessible source of food assistance to hungry children and their families.”

How the School Pantry Program Works:

·      Food Bank of Iowa provides the product, structure oversight and equipment to the schools

·      Pantries are stocked with products similar to a regular pantry

·      School personnel help facilitate access and oversight of the pantry

·      Students and their families can visit the pantry as needed

“Because of the close relationships between students and faculty, school personnel frequently become aware of challenges families are facing,” says Brittany Salton, RN, BSN Winterset Middle School. “A school pantry becomes a safe, supportive way to help our students and their families, which in turn helps the student become more successful in school. We are excited to be part of the pilot School Pantry Program and look forward to growing our partnership with the Food Bank of Iowa.”
