Charles H. Parks, 90, died of cancer on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Israel Hospice Home in Ames. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 15 at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at Oralabor Cemetery in Ankeny.

Charles was born February 27, 1924 in Cabot, Arkansas to Charles and Edna (Bass) Parks. He was an Army Veteran of WWII. Charles lived in Fort Dodge from 1951 until 1977 where he served on the Fort Dodge Police Force for 27 years retiring as a Captain in 1977. After retirement he lived in Hot Springs, AR and Branson, MO before returning to the Des Moines and Ankeny area in 1980 before moving to Ames about 8 years ago.
Charles enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars and toy pedal cars. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He founded the Mark Tree Band which recorded country music and played on local Arkansas radio stations.

Survivors include his children, Nancy West of Colorado, Dennis Parks of Des Moines, Janet (Dale) Hearn of Ft. Dodge, Robert (Judy) Parks of Ames; nine grandchildren, Charles and Michael Hedensten, Scotty Parks, Casey and Jenna Hearn, Grant and Steven Parks and Melissa and Stephanie Mendenhall; four great grandchildren including Cole Parks; and brother, Tommy Parks of Missouri. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Donella; daughter, Jane Mendenhall; five sisters, Ethel, Jean, Ann, Lillian and Helen; and his brother, Wayne.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 14 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Online condolences are welcome at
