Michael L. Raye, 72, passed away Friday, January 2. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, at Plymouth Congregational Church.
A lifelong Des Moines resident, Mike was a proud graduate of North High School and attended Drake University. He shared many tall tales about times spent at the Bean Bowl and his escapades in Snoosville.
Mike had a long career in residential and commercial real estate, most recently serving as president of Universal Realty. He served terms as president of the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors, and was named Realtor of the Year in 1996.
He was a licensed curmudgeon, though the twinkle in his eyes and his droll sense of humor belied his true nature. He was a charter member of the Lounge Lizards and a motorcycle enthusiast, winning every race he entered. An admittedly mediocre golfer, he was nonetheless a stickler for the rules. And, surprising himself as much as anyone, in his later years, he moved away from being a die-hard Republican.
Mike cherished his wife of 33 years, Susan, and their dessert cart story will live in infamy. He was also devoted to his special companion, Honey. The Raye home was always filled with laughter, and the deck frequently overflowed with friends and family at their impromptu parties.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Michael (Michelle Johnson) Raye and David (Cindy) Raye; stepdaughters, Mindy (Paul) Schrimpf and Amy (Chas) DeGroot; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Diana Hanisch, Linda Harvey (Tom) and Carol Raye; brother, Martin Raye and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Plymouth Church, or the charity of your choice.
