John H. Grisso, 90, passed away peacefully at his home and entered the Church Triumphant on Thursday, January 1, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 1195 Prairieview Avenue, south of Van Meter. Cremation rites will follow the service on Monday, and private committal services will take place at a later date.
John was born on February 21, 1924 in Carroll, IA to Bert and Nina Grisso. He was raised and attended school in Scranton, IA. John left high school in December of 1942 to join the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Doran in both the European and Asian theaters of WWII. After his service ended, John returned to Iowa, met and married his wife of 61 years, Margaret Ray. They made their home in Waukee and raised their family there. John worked as a diesel mechanic in the Des Moines area for various construction companies and retired from the Iowa State Liquor Commission in 1987. He loved to hunt and fish, play golf, read good books, solve Sudoku and cheer on the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Grisso; three children, Mary (Dean) Daib, David (Jenni) Grisso, and Dale Grisso; brother, William Grisso; six grandchildren, Kelsey Grisso, Jill Grisso, Elizabeth (Brian) Kaldunski, Kathryn (Jared) Battani, Whitney Grisso and Johnathon Grisso; three great-grandchildren, Tessa, Isaac and Anna; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, at Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center.
