Ames Public Library is working hard to give you plenty of reasons to leave your house this winter. Here are just a few of the special events coming in January:
The Winter Reading Program for adults, teens, and children begins January 2. Sign up online at www.amespubliclibrary.org or at the Library and earn a chance at a prize just for reading.
Bring your new (or not so new) tablet or smart phone to one of our Tech Talks and learn how to check out free e-books from the Library. We’ll walk you through using our e-books on iPads and Android devices Tuesdays, January 6 and 20 at 2pm in the Studio. On January 13 and 27, we’ll talk about e-books for Kindle.
We’ll have a cookbook sale in Literary Grounds January 16-18. Stop by for great deals on recipes to keep you warm and full!
The Orchesis I dance company will perform a special preview of this year’s Barjche production Sunday, January 18 at 1pm in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium. This year’s theme is “Plugged In.”
Join National Readathon Day Saturday, January 24 from 12 to 4pm. We’ll have cozy spots throughout the Library where you can enjoy a book, e-book, or graphic novel and show your support for literacy and a lifelong love of reading. All ages are welcome. Stop in for a few minutes or the whole shebang. You can even bring your favorite pillow or blanket if you want to get extra comfy.
Celtic harper Barbara Evenson will perform a free concert Sunday, January 25 at 2pm in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium. She plays dance tunes, songs, and airs from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
Meet not one, not two, but three bestselling mystery authors Saturday, January 31 at 2pm in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium. Anna Loan-Wilsey of Story County writes the historical, cozy “Hattie Davish Mysteries Series.” Sparkle Abbey is the pseudonym of Iowa authors Mary Lee Woods and Anita Carter, who write a series which combines murder, zany characters, and the wacky world of pampered pets. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Teens are invited to our first ever Karaoke Tournament in the Teen Space Saturday, January 31 from 2-4pm. Spectators are welcome, too!
Don’t let cabin fever get you down. Come out and enjoy your renewed Ames Public Library!
