Q: What improvements have been made in dentistry?

Posted December 31, 2014 in Advice Column, Ames

A: Have you ever watched the videos created by David Letterman, sharing his dental experiences? These sketches are 20 years old, but the humor is timeless! Go to YouTube and key in “David Letterman – Dentist” for some laughs. You will also observe the many amazing changes in dentistry that have occurred since then.

One great example, is the use of lasers. Laser dentistry was developed specifically to repair decayed and damaged teeth, and to treat gum disease and other soft tissue safely and comfortably. A laser can be used to perform many procedures without an injection to prevent pain. Most patients dread treatment due to the needle stick, having to deal with waiting for the anesthetic to take effect and later, the awful numbness. Laser energy numbs the area naturally, and allows the dentist to perform treatment without the heat, vibration and pressure. Laser dentistry is more convenient and comfortable with less time in the chair and no lingering numbness.  It is also more precise in removing decay or cutting tissue.

Today you should enjoy an outstanding dental experience. You should not have to say, “I’m just now getting the feeling back in my elbows”, like Dave Letterman stated 20 years ago!!
