“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

– 1 John 1:9

The Bible teaches us about repentance, forgiveness, and turning from sin and at First Christian Church of Perry, “It’s okay not to be okay. “ First Christian practices as the Disciples of Christ and offers an open invitation to all who have fallen short.

So what exactly does discipleship mean?  The original discipleship calls back to the original twelve followers of Christ. Today, however, discipleship is what is shared by any devout follower of Jesus. It falls in accordance with the church’s mission, which reads in part: “We commit ourselves to living and teaching the works of Jesus as we celebrate His Presence and carry out His Mission of healing and salvation.”

Discipleship at First Christian is not an exclusive club or a card you carry in your wallet—but rather a more personal way of worshiping. Common practices include open communion during service and baptism by way of immersion.

Discipleship affirms that all people are children of Christ and should be treated as such. The strong focus on discipleship means that no judgment will be passed when you walk through the church doors on Sunday. Instead, new members will have the chance to strengthen and grow their relationship with Christ and find new ways to study the Bible and worship. But it doesn’t stop there.

First Christian asserts that Christians from all walks of life are welcome to join them. Varying viewpoints and interpretations of the Bible are set aside as all are welcome to enjoy the freedom of the Holy Spirit.

Practicing discipleship

How do the Disciples of Christ put their religious tools work? Beyond worship service every Sunday, First Christian offers early morning adult classes and children’s Sunday school. It is in this time that a special focus is made on studying and developing skill sets vital to live a good Christian life. The Disciples Men group also meets periodically through the calendar year, enjoying breakfast and fellowship on the first and third Thursdays of the month.

The Disciples of Christ belongs to a major network of mainline Christian churches that offer events both regionally and nationally that interested members can get involved in as well.
