In 2010 Mike and Sherri Bruckshaw downsized from their house on a three-acre lot to a cozy contemporary home In Johnston’s unique Long Meadow Lane neighborhood.
The couple would soon become empty nesters and that, paired with the desire for less space and yard work, solidified their decision to build.
Sherri had her eye on downtown living in Des Moines. But after 23 years in Johnston, it was just too difficult to uproot. Instead the couple worked with an architect and in eight months their dream was complete. Now the Bruckshaws have the best of both worlds—a loft-style contemporary home in the suburbs.
Their youngest son’s graduation party was scheduled for spring 2011, so Sherri kept the momentum going long after moving day.
“The graduation party was my motivation to keep working on the inside decorating over those months and to get a lot done,” she says.
Sherri has loved interior design for as long as she can remember. She successfully juggled decorating jobs for 18 years while being a stay-at-home mom. She is currently employed as a design consultant and her passion is obvious in every corner of the home.
After walking through the front door, guests are greeted by a spacious entryway with natural light and an open staircase that separates the top sitting area, kitchen, office and master bedroom from the lower level family area and additional bedrooms.
The neutral color scheme, birch wood floors, white woodwork, Italian tile surrounding the fireplace and vintage refurbished church doors are more personal touches the couple hand-picked for the home.
Sherri enjoyed bringing her decorative scheme to life in every room, but she says the kitchen is her favorite space.
“We have open shelving in our kitchen and dark-espresso bottom drawers. It took the most time,” she says. “I also love the lighting, I feel it’s an important detail.”
Mike enjoys the geothermal aspects of the home and its smaller size.
The couple has many long-time friends in Johnston that they’ve enjoyed entertaining over the years. Mike and Sherri’s most cherished memories are the times spent with their two sons in the home.
“I’ll never forget my son’s graduation party here,” Sherri says. “And there’s nothing better than when our kids come home for the holidays.”
