Marcella “Sally” Saxen departed this life on December 26, 2014 in Cedar Rapids to join her husband, Henry, at the Lord’s Table.
Sally was born to Albert and Clara Schultz on November 15, 1925 in Iowa County and graduated from Guernsey High School in 1944. Sally later met her soul mate, Henry Saxen, Jr. “Sax,” and they were married in 1947. She graduated from Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in 1948, a profession she would embrace her whole life. Their marriage was filled with love and mutual support, blessed with four children – Tom, Dick, Harry and Mary Ann – and a unique sense of humor. Together, they owned and operated Saxen Jewelry in Stuart, Iowa for 33 years until their retirement in 1985. Sally and Sax were known for involvement in their church, their community and their kids’ school activities. In retirement, they traveled the world and enjoyed new and exciting experiences.
When Sax’s health deteriorated, Sally assumed her greatest role as his caregiver, treating him with love, respect and support. When Sax went to heaven in 1991, Sally embraced the rest of her life with vigor. She participated in Volksmarch 10K walks all over our country and the world, meeting new people and experiencing new things. Sally loved sharing her travels with her family, friends and social groups. She really enjoyed attending and cheering the activities of her grandchildren and sharing her love of reading and storytelling. When her own health worsened from Huntington’s Disease, Sally accepted it with dignity, grace and a positive attitude. She was an organ donor and strongly believed in medical research to find cures for all diseases.
Sally will be honored by her children, Tom (Jane) Saxen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Richard (Lori) Saxen of Watauga, Texas; Harry (Maria) Saxen of Phoenix, AZ; and Mary Ann Morgan (Bob) of Van Meter, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A celebration of Sally’s life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 29 at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn’s Chapel. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private family inurnment of Sally and Sax’s cremated remains will take place later at South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart, Iowa.
