Norma Jean Fitts

Norma Jean Fitts

Norma was born on September 8, 1927, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, one of four daughters to James Hershel and Rosa Clara (Hamlow) Waggoner. She was a 1945 graduate of Ft. Dodge High School and a 1948 graduate of Iowa Methodist Nursing School. Norma enlisted with the U.S. Air Force and served as a nurse for two years, until she was honorably discharged. During that time, she met her future husband, a fighter pilot and the love of her life, James “Jim” A. Fitts. On May 31, 1958, Norma and Jim were united in marriage in the Base Chapel at Malmstrom AFB, and to this union, one son was born. For many years, Norma was employed as Registered Nurse with various Hospitals until her retirement. Always adventurous and outgoing, she enjoyed traveling, fishing and being outdoors. Most of all, she loved spending time with Jim and her family and friends. A mentor to many, Norma’s warm spirit and passion shined as she so lovingly enjoyed helping others. She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, mentor and friend; Norma will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her Husband of 56 years, James A. Fitts Sr. (Retired LTC USAF) of Urbandale; son, James A. Fitts Jr. (Retired LTC USAF) and his wife, Mary Victoria Fitts of North Pole, AK; two grandchildren, Eric James Fitts and Katherine Rose Fitts both of North Pole; and one sister, Marylou Wood of Iowa Falls, IA. Norma was preceded into eternal life by her parents; and two sisters, Juanita “Nita” Rathermel and Karen “Kae” Hemann. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a Vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV). They may be sent to AFEV at 92 Sunset Lane, Shalimar, FL 32579-1000; or
