Ernest Plum, Jr.

Ernest “Ernie” Plum Jr, 71, passed from this life on Monday, December 15, 2014 at the Madrid Home in Madrid. In agreement with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Ernie’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time. A committal service is being planned at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Ernie was born on December 22, 1942 on a farm near Iowa Falls, Iowa, one of four children to Ernest Arthur and Sarah (Thatcher) Plum. He served with the U.S. Air Force for four years, until he was honorably discharged. Ernest was united in marriage to Joann Frances Smith and to this union, two children were born. For 18 years, Ernie was a truck driver with the former American Freight Systems. He also did maintenance work with Sun Prairie Apartments in West Des Moines and Urbandale; and cleaning with Farm Bureau in West Des Moines and Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, until his retirement.

A man who loved and served his God. In his earlier years, Ernie had studied Theology at Omaha Baptist Bible College and then continued his studies at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA. He loved to sing and spread the good word of our Lord. Ernie had many ways of expressing his love, especially when he personally selected and bought beautiful greeting cards for his wife, Joann. He is a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Ames, IA.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Joann Plum of Madrid; daughter, Elisabeth “Beth” (Mike) Baldus of Boone; son, Timothy “Tim” (Shanna) Plum of St. Louis, MO; three sisters, Betty (Harris) Bettenga, Viola (Alvin) Price and Dorothy Clayman; and eight grandchildren, Devan, April and Adam Baldus, and Kaila, Laurin, Natalie, Caleb and Joshua Plum. Ernie was preceded into eternal life by his parents.
