Jane Voigts, a United Methodist Church pastor who grew up as a member of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, will present “Our Funny (as in Ha Ha) Bible” on Sunday, January 4, 6:30 p.m. Her presentation will be at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, preceded by a potluck supper at 5:30.
Improv games for the whole family will be a part of the evening. The public is invited. The church is located at 1260 66th St. in Windsor Heights.
Now a professional comic whose home is in southern California, Voigts is currently living in Waverly caring for her parents, Roy and Darlene Voigts, who had been members of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church before moving to Waverly a few years ago.
She will be appearing at the Des Moines Social Club Thursday, January 8, 7 p.m., in a variety show: “The Bible Cabaret: A Music & Comedy Review Starring the Old and New Testaments.” The Cabaret is an exploration of ways the Bible is a comedy, intended to make us laugh, in a variety of ways. Voigts will be performing character sketches and comedy-of-the-Bible monologues. Sharing the stage will be local jazz and rhythm and blues singer Tina Haase Findlay of bella soul.
In the early 80s just after college, Voigts moved to Chicago to pursue improv and stand-up comedy, then moved to Los Angeles to continue these pursuits. She found her spiritual home in the United Methodist Church, graduated from Claremont School of Theology in 1996 and transitioned into ordained ministry. At Claremont she created an improv troupe of seminarians called “Angelic Residue.” She has continued to pursue building new bridges between comedy and theology.
