After a nice long workout one night, I was looking for a quick, healthy and delicious dinner. Since Jimmy John’s has just recently opened in a new strip mall in West Des Moines, I decided to stop by and see what they had to offer.
A Jimmy John’s fan to begin with, I knew what to expect on the menu, but I am usually a big fan of the drive-through service. This time, however, I decided to check out the inside and see what made this one just as good as the rest.
On a Friday night, I thought it might be busy, and I was right. Luckily I was the first one inside, but a few other families jumped in line right after I did. On first look, the restaurant is tiny inside. There are only a handful of tables, and you walk right up to the counter when you walk in. However, the staff is smiley, and the whole place was sparkling clean.
I glanced at the menu to see the usual suspects. Jimmy John’s offers lots of different sandwiches on their signature French bread. If you have ever had their bread, you know it’s something special. Warm and toasty with an almost buttery taste, it definitely makes the sandwich top notch. However, if you aren’t into french bread or want something just a bit larger, the giant club sandwiches are double the meat and cheese and can be put on seven grain bread instead. Most of their sandwiches come with various toppings and veggies, but they do have some “slim” options that are free of the sauce and vegetables.
I am usually a pretty big fan of the slim sandwiches but decided to go with the Pepe this time around. With ham, provolone cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and tomato, it packs a lot of flavors into its eight inches. To top it off, I ordered some barbecue chips and a soda.
In what seemed like just a few seconds, my sandwich was ready, and I was grabbing my fountain soda to go. With a parking spot right near the door, I was off to devour my dinner.
