December 12 at the Temple B’nai Jeshurun of which he was a longtime member. Burial will be at Woodland Emmanuel Jewish Cemetery.
Fred was born in Vienna, Austria on November 23, 1923 to Leo and Clara (Hirschoron) Lorber and escaped Nazi Germany with his parents to come to New York City in 1939. He served with the U.S. Army in North Africa and Europe during World War II and had been an active part of the Des Moines community since 1950. As a renowned Des Moines business leader, Fred owned Lortex company from which he retired in 1995.
Fred served as President of the Iowa Sales Executive Club, The Jewish Federation, Temple B’nai Jeshurun, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Community Relations Commission. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the School of Home Economics at Iowa State University and the Board of Trustees of Simpson College.
Those left to cherish Fred’s memory include his wife, Miriam of Des Moines; son, Steve Lorber of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Randy Lorber of Des Moines and Susan (Donald) Polden of San Jose, CA; and three grandchildren, Andrew J. (Georgia) Hawkins and Laura and Emma Polden. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert J. Lorber.
Fred’s family wishes to thank his caregivers, Olga and Sara; Aviva and Lynn of Senior Helpers; Lisa and Allison of Unity Point Hospice; the staff at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center and doctors, Greg Hicklin, Tom Buroker and Lou Schneider.
