Ruby Irene Smith, a resident of the Carroll Health Center in Carroll, Iowa, passed away at St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital in Carroll on August 23, 2014. She was 96 years young.
Ruby was born July 3, 1918 to Charles and Ellen Hegwood in Revere, Minnesota. The Hegwood’s raised six children: Kenneth, Harold, Betty, Ruby, Goldie, and Sylvia. When Ruby was young, her family moved to Paton in Greene County, Iowa. Ruby would live nearly all of the remainder of her life in Greene County.
She married Marvin Andrew Richardson on October 4, 1942 in Tarkio, Missouri. The couple made their home one mile north of Cooper, Iowa. Ruby and Marvin raised six children of their own: Gerald, Dorothy, Larry, Marvin James, Donna, and Douglas. Marvin passed away on November 9, 1980; Ruby married Jacob “Jack” Gladstone Smith at the Open Bible Church in Jefferson on May 7, 1983.
In addition to working for many years at the Truck Haven in Jefferson, Ruby was also known as an active volunteer within her church and a welcomed, smiling face at community activities. She was always known as someone who preferred to be active and busy. At home she had a reputation as an excellent cook who could take whatever basic things were in her cupboard and turn them into a memorable meal from which no one would walk away still hungry! Ruby also loved gardening and tending her flowers; not surprisingly she especially loved ruby red roses.
Most of all Ruby is remembered for her large and loving heart, her genuine and caring spirit, as well as her playful and sometimes feisty sense of humor. She is described as a wonderful, loving, witty, saintly woman who was always filled with joy and made everyone who crossed her path feel like a long-time member of the family. The deep appreciation and love so broadly expressed about her reveals volumes about the legacy of her life and the impact that she had upon others.
Ruby is survived by one sister Betty Mull of Jefferson and three of her children: Dorothy (and Zene O.) Smith of Carroll, Donna Jensen of Churdan, and Marvin James Richardson of Perry. She is also survived by sister-in-laws: Jeanette Richardson of Estherville and Kathy Hegwood of Carroll, daughter-in-law Barb Richardson of Jefferson, as well as: 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Preceding Ruby in death are: her parents, Charles and Ellen, her husband Marvin Richardson and her husband Jacob “Jack” Smith, two brothers and two sisters, three sons, and one great-granddaughter.
Pall Bearers will be: Dylan Delp, Andrew Richardson, Jamie Richardson, Jeff Richardson, Matt Richardson, Jerry Smith, Paul Smith, and Zene Z. Smith. Honorary Pall Bearers will include: Dave Delp, Jim Delp, Marvin James Richardson, and Zene O. Smith.
