Funeral Services for Velma Winkelman, 98, of Jefferson will be 11:00 am Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 am Saturday, 1 hour prior to the service at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and may be left at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home.

Velma Ruth Winkelman, daughter of Arthur Winkelman and Allie West Winkelman, was born April 18, 1916 in her family home in rural Greene County, Iowa and died August 20, 2014 at the Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care in Jefferson, Iowa at the Age of 98.

When Velma was 2 years old, her family, including her parents 2 brothers and her sister moved to Lohrville, Iowa. She attended county school near Lohrville graduating from Lohrville High School in 1933. After high school she helped at home and in the homes of others with illnesses and newborns. Velma then worked for Gately’s Variety Store for 10 years after moving to Jefferson in 1948. She then attended Beauty School in Fort Dodge, Iowa graduating on February 10, 1955. Velma worked in several Beauty Salons around town, working until she was almost 80 years old.

She lived most of her adult life in Jefferson helping with the care of her parents for several years. Velma was very close to her nieces and nephews. Velma enjoyed traveling with her parents to Texas in the winters for several years. Later, Velma also traveled with friends, her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed the lights and sounds of Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, Europe, and Branson, Missouri being her favorite. She was an avid crocheter, knitter, and her specialty was pie baking. She was a two year champion pie baker for the Pork Producers “Bake with Lard” contest.

Velma was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Adaza, Churdan, and most recently in Jefferson, United Methodist Women Auxiliary, Friendly Club, and she was a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Allie, brothers Paul and Dean, sister Dorothy Schilling, nephew Robert Winkelman, and niece Deanne Winkelman. She is survived by 2 sisters-in-law: Joyce Winkelman of Scranton, IA and Doris Winkelman of Jefferson, IA; her nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
